Our Coaching Philosophy

At Kaizen Mental Performance, we help athletes and high achievers of all levels to reach their performance potential in their respective field or sport. Using peer-reviewed sports psychology techniques, Dr. Frazer Atkinson identifies performance barriers and works together with his clients to build personalized solutions that help maximize their performance.

What is “Kaizen?

The term “Kaizen” has its foundations in Japanese philosophy, and literally means “change for the better.” It’s an important part of the Japanese success formula in all areas of life, and we consistently use Kaizen principles to empower the people we work with.

Unlocking Potential

We all bring skills and talents to the table, but so many of us don’t reach our goals because we don’t have the tools to unlock our full potential. Whether you’re an athlete reaching for the next level or a team leader looking to unlock your team’s potential, Frazer can build a mental performance program that works for you.

Pain Points

If you’re having trouble reaching your goals, or if your team is underachieving, don’t worry – you’re not alone. Chances are that one the following factors could be getting in the way:

  • Challenges Dealing with Pressure
Challenges are a central part of sport and business, and with every challenge there is pressure. The key here is to acknowledge the pressure, adapt to the situation and take charge of the big moment.

  • Mismanagement of Emotions
In the performance business, emotions are a double-edged sword. Used correctly, they can give you energy and focus. However, they can also make you feel uncertain or distract you from your goal. We’ll help you understand the emotions that work for you as you reach for your best performance.

  • Overthinking
In both sports and business, there’s a time for planning and strategy, but when you need to execute, overthinking can be a major problem. Overthinking involves “thought loops,” like replaying past events or worrying about the future, and this habit can negatively affect your focus at key execution moments.

  • Low Confidence
We all have a story, and we tell it to ourselves regularly. For many of us, this story can be inaccurate or overly negative, creating confidence roadblocks that cause us to doubt our ability. We’ll work with you to understand key truths in your story that generate confidence in the moments you most need it.

  • Loss of Concentration or Focus
When you are in a big moment, bringing focus to your talents and skills can help you reach for the finish line. At these times, if you get caught up in the importance of the event instead focusing on what you need to do, you’ll have trouble reaching for success.

  • Unclear Goals
It’s not enough to “want” to succeed. Without clear, attainable goals, you won’t reach your destination. Setting the bar too low can also be an issue. Frazer will help you define and reach goals, showing you how to “aim higher” without being unrealistic.

  • Lack of Awareness
Lack of situational awareness can affect your timing, and ultimately your achievement. We’ll help you develop awareness so that you know when it’s time to “play big” instead of playing small and missing an opportunity.

Solutions

At Kaizen, Frazer uses his expertise to inspire individuals and teams to overcome challenges. Whether you need help with preparation, execution, the inner game or team building, Frazer will help you build a success solution that meets your individual or team needs.

PREPARATION AND EXECUTION SKILLS

  • Goal setting
When you have a razor-sharp focus, you’re much more likely to meet and even exceed expectations. We’ll team up with you to develop a comprehensive set of goals that allows you to focus and decisively  realize your potential.

  • Pre-Performance Routines
Pre-performance routines are a key part of preparation for big moments. We’ll show you how techniques like visualization and breathing practice can calm nerves and create focus.

  • Leadership
Leadership matters for both individual and team goals. For individuals, we ask, “Are you the captain of your own ship?” Answered well, this question will help you get to your destination. For teams, the question is, “Have you created frameworks and structures that allow you to “fly in formation” towards your team’s goals and aspirations?”

  • Communication
Healthy inner and interpersonal conversations will enable you or your organization to achieve your goals.

THE INNER GAME

  • Building confidence
Building confidence helps you “get out of your own way.” and helps ensure that you don’t look back with regret, knowing you could have “played bigger.”

  • Performing Under Pressure
When you learn to embrace the moment instead of letting the moment overwhelm you, you’ll maximize your talent, and we’ll help you get there.

  • Mental Toughness
When the going gets tough, winners get tougher. They simply find comfort in the chaos of sport and performance. We’ll help you win, building your mental toughness as you navigate your way to success.

  • Self-Awareness
Self-awareness is about being aware of you how you think and behave in pivotal moments. It’s also about regulating your thoughts and emotions so that they support you rather than hurt you during these moments.

  • Mindfulness
Mindfulness refers to your ability to embrace the moment through all your senses, enjoying challenges and leaving distractions behind.

  • Performance Anxiety
While performance anxiety is typically seen as negative, an optimal level of anxiety and nervousness can boost performance. With Frazer’s assistance, you’ll find that balance.

  • Resilience
The path to success is never a straight line, and it requires resilience. Frazer will teach you how to find resilience and thrive under pressure.

MAXIMIZING TEAM PERFORMANCE

  • Team Confidence
Team confidence is important. We create team confidence by developing a team’s or organization’s belief in achieving a shared plan of action.

  • Team Cohesion
We work to develop relationships within your team to ensure that there is a concept of “we” rather than “me.”

  • Team Roles
A team is greater than the sum of the parts . . . provided everyone’s roles and tasks align with their strengths. Frazer will review team strengths, roles and task to make sure that teams are reaching their peak potential.

  • Team Building
Team building is about bringing people together, and Frazer is expert at implementing fun, collaborative activities that develop the relationships required to help the team achieve its goals.
